Ciao a tutti,

Dopo mesi (18) di silenzio rieccomi!

Volevo aggiornarvi molto velocemente su alcune nuove prospettive lavorative. Il mio contratto in Irlanda cofinanziato da una società di Genova  (D’Appolonia) e dal governo Irlandese finirà a dicembre. Successivamente avro’ la possibilita’ di continuare per altri due anni a lavorare interamente per l’universita’ di Galway su alcuni progetti di ricerca legati all'efficienza energetica nello stesso gruppo in cui mi trovo e che ho contribuito a costruire in questi 5 anni.

A lungo termine il sogno universitario in Italia rimane nello sfondo quasi impossibile... ma chissa’...

Parallelamente ho accettato una proposta interessante, quella di far parte di una nuova Srl insieme ad altri 6 soci... per ora una scommessa con la speranza che sia qualcosa di promettente a lungo termine. Con Chiara tutto bene, ormai sono due anni ed e’ bello cosi’, ora con il fatto che sono a Milano piu’ spesso e’ tutto piu’ facile...in teoria : ).

Il fatto di essere piu’ spesso a Milano da Natale ad oggi mi ha permesso di rientrare in modo piu’ attivo nel mondo scout, passando pero’ a fare il capo per i ragazzi di 17-19 anni, esperienza tosta, abituato alla fatica con i bambini (lupetti) non pensavo fosse cosi’ dura entrare nella relazione con ragazzi di questa eta’ dove viene sempre tutto messo in discussione... mi sto rendendo conto di quanto sia veramente difficile fare il genitore.

Tutto qui, e’ un periodo nel quale si fa fatica a trovare il tempo per altro... abbiate pazienza con me, primo o poi riusciremo a vederci!

Hello everyone,

After 18 months 18 of silence here I am!

I wanted to quickly update you on some new job prospects. My contract in Ireland funded by an Italian company of Genoa (D'Appolonia) and the Irish government will end in December. Then I'll have the opportunity to continue for another two years to work for the university of Galway on projects related to energy efficiency in the same research group where I am and that I helped to build up in the last 5 years or so. In the long run the dream is an academic position in Italy, it is almost impossible ... but who knows ...

A the same time, I accepted an interesting offer, to be part of a new Ltd company along with 6 other partners... This is like a bet now with the hope that it will become something promising in the long term. With Chiara everything is good, we have been together for more than two years, great! Since now I am more often in Milan everything is much easier... in theory : ).

Being more in Milan means also being back as a boy scout leader, this time not anymore with cubs (8-12 years old) but with older boys and girls (16-19). I did not think that it wousl have been so hard to deal with them at this age everything is always questioned ... I am beginning to realize how truly difficult is to be a parent.

It has been a crazy period in which it is hard to find time for anything else... bear with me, sooner or later we will talk or meet!

Cari amici,
Sono ancora vivo!
Dall'ultimo messaggio di marzo sono cambiate tantissime cose e io sono stato cosi' preso che non mi sono mai fatto vivo e non ho neanche riposto ancora alle email di alcuni di voi... ci sto arrivando pian piano, scusate! Vi aggiorno sulle novità più rilevanti per la mia vita negli ultimi 9 mesi:

1- Ho incontrato Chiara, ragazza di Milano del giro scout che mi ha cambiato la vita... ebbene si, nonostante la ricerca sfrenata all'estero (senza successo) sono tornato all'ovile. Sono felicissimo (come mai prima ;-) e spero proprio che "il buon giorno si veda dal mattino" anche in questo caso! Vi dico qualcosa di lei... oltre ad essere capo scout ha 21 anni ed e' iscritta al terzo anno di scienze ambientali in Bicocca. Abita in zona Paolo Sarpi e quando siamo insieme diciamo che siamo di Milano e ci presentiamo come quello del Bronx e quella di Chinatown. Potrei andare avanti ore a parlarvi di lei, invece vi dico che la conoscerete di persona, prima o poi... non c'e' fretta!

2- Ho finito il dottorato di ricerca qui a Galway, evviva! ...ora mi tocca proprio iniziare lavorare, niente piu' scuse! ;-) Nel mese di Marzo scorso ho conosciuto per puro caso a Bruxelles ad un incontro europeo sull'efficienza energetica, una società di ingegneria di Genova (D'Appolonia) che lavora in questo campo e ha un settore di ricerca e sviluppo che fa progetti di ricerca europei nel mio campo (efficienza energetica degli edifici). Siccome si stanno espandendo, mi avevano proposto un contratto per il dopo dottorato, in parallelo pero' io sono riuscito a trovare (e ottenere) un finanziamento Irlandese che consiste in un contratto di 24 mesi da ricercatore nella mia università di Galway. Praticamente se hai un'azienda che ti sponsorizza e proponi un progetto valido e hai un po' di fortuna, lo stato irlandese ti finanzia 2/3 del progetto (mentre 1/3 viene dall'azienda). Quindi ho iniziato questo lavoro sponsorizzato dall'azienda di cui sopra e mi fermo qui a Galway per ancora 1 anno facendo avanti e indietro da Genova mensilmente e poi il secondo anno sarò stabilmente in azienda tra Genova e (forse) Milano visto che forse metteranno anche qualcuno che fa ricerca nel loro ufficio di San Donato... vedremo. Morale: costo meno a quelli di Genova, io prendo uno stipendio Irlandese (anche se le poche tasse che pago qui si sommano alla differenza che devo versare in Italia), continuo a mantenere i contatti costruiti in questi tre anni e soprattutto rientro in Italia tra 1 anno senza dover ripartire da zero con il lavoro ma andando in continuità con quello che ho fatto... detto cosi' sembra perfetto... vedremo! Con grande fortuna sono riuscito a prendere sto finanziamento poco prima che arrivasse il fondo monetario internazionale a sistemare le finanze locali. Nel frattempo ho anche fatto il corso di certificatore energetico degli edifici per la Lombardia... nel caso qualcuno ne abbia bisogno sappiate che ho l'abilitazione.

3- Tra delirio per concludere tesi e dottorato e viaggi sempre più frequenti in Italia e in questi ultimi mesi sono sempre stato un po di corsa e il futuro prossimo non si prospetta molto diverso... qui a Galway pero' la vita procede bene. Marina, la ragazza spagnola del mio coinquilino Igancio, e' tornata in spagna dopo un anno insieme. Il coinquilino ungherese (Attila) e' andato a Cork e ha lasciato spazio ad una ragazza svizzera (Stefanie) che continua la tradizione internazionale del nostro appartamento. Chiara ha fatto 5 settimane qui per lavorare sulla sua tesina del 3 terzo anno in collaborazione con l'università di Galway...che fortuna anche qui! Fare il dottorato servira' a qualcosa no? ;-)

4- L'11 dicembre sarò con il cuore a Piazza S. Giovanni a Roma e il 14 mi auguro inizi una nuova fase per la politica italiana e per il nostro paese, siamo messi male ma speriamo che questo sia il fondo!

Dear friends,
I am still alive!
Since the last message on my blog (it was in March) so many things have changed and I have been very busy so that I haven't even written any message and I am still due some replies to a couple of your emails... sorry! I am getting there... With this message I'll just update you on the most relevant news for my life in the last 9 months:

1- I have met Chiara, a girl from Milan involved in the Scout movement who has changed my life... so finally after such a long and demanding research abroad I found a girlfriend back home! I am super happy (as never before ;-) and I really hope that: "the good day is good from the morning" (Italian saying) also with her! Few things about her: she is 21 and she is a scout leader. She studies environmental science in Milan and lives in Chinatown (a very central area near by the Castle)... cool I am form the Bronx and she is from Chinatown... so be careful! I could keep talking about her for hours, however I just tell you that you'll meet her in person hopefully soon... no rush!

2- I am finished with my PhD here in Galway... yes! Now, no excuses I have to start working ;-) Last March, I met by chance with an Italian company (D'Appolonia) in Brussels at an event about energy efficiency. They have a strong R&D division and some projects about energy efficiency of buildings (my field). They offered me contract for after the PhD, however in the mean time I have found and obtained 24 months funding for a post doc here in Ireland. If you have a good research project, a sponsoring company (the Italian one in my case) and you are lucky enough the Irish research council funds 2/3 of you cost and the remaining is covered by the company. Therefore I am still here for a year with monthly visits to the company and then I'll go there for 10 months next year to finish the project. The company's headquarter is in Genoa (200 km from Milan) but they have a small office near Milan, so for the future this might be good. I have been very lucky in getting this funding right before the IMF arrival and the Irish bailout. So far it looks great... let's see how it goes!

3- With the mess to finish up my thesis and also more frequent trips back to Italy I have been running all over the place and the next two years don't look any different. Anyways here in Galway life is still as good. Marina the Spanish girlfriend of my flatmate Ignacio went back to Spain after a year with us. The Hungarian flatmate (Attila) has moved to Cork and a new Swiss girl (Stefanie) has just come to continue the international tradition of our flat. Also Chiara spent here 5 weeks working for her final year project at my university! Being a PhD student here for years was worth something! ;-)

4- On the 11th of this month I'll be virtually with my political heart in Roma for a big manifestation against the government and I have all my finger crossed for the 14th when the parliament will vote for Berlusconi's confidence, at the moment he is likely not to get it... let's hope to get rid of him now and forever!

Carissimi,
per quelli di voi che si stavano chiedendo se fossi ancora vivo, la risposta e’ affermativa, dall’ultima mail con gli auguri di natale, sono passati due mesi e mezzo e d un sacco di cose.
La prima e’ stato il viaggio in Terra Santa inaspettato e organizzato all’ultimo per sostituire un ragazzo di un gruppo scout di amici che all’ultimo ha rinunciato. Una settimana ad inizio gennaio in cui ho toccato con mano le contraddizioni dei questa terra e tutti i problemi che si porta con se. Il giro e’ stato organizzato dall’AGESCI Lombardia in modo ineccepibile, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di incontrare molte persone e realtà diverse dall'ebrea sopravvissuta ad Auschwitz, agli arabi cattolici (unici cattolici in terra santa!), dal Kibbutz ebreo all'ospedale per bambini di Betlemme che essendo dietro al muro spesso non riceve i permessi per portare i bambini in tempo a Gerusalemme in chirurgia.
La dimensione spirituale dell’esperienza (come la giornata di cammino nel deserto di Giuda da Gerusalemme a Gerico) ha saputo riaccendere un poco la speranza che si perde facilmente parlando con la gente e guardandosi attorno.
Poi sono rientrato in Irlanda, con il nuovo coinquilino ungherese e gia’ 5 ospiti in questo 2010, siamo in alta stagione! Nell’ordine sono venuti Annaig (ex coinquilina francese ai tempi dell’Erasmus), Javi (fratello di Ignacio) e Veronica (scout di Milano), Tarcisio & Paolo (mio papa’ e mio cugino) e la mamma di Attila dall’Ungheria. Io nel frattempo ho fatto un salto con il mio prof a Brussells per un evento della commissione europea sull’efficienza energetica alla caccia di partner europei per nuovi progetti di ricerca e anche di prospettive per il sottoscritto nel caso non si trovino fondi per rimanere qui a Galway dopo ottobre. Non e’ stato facile ma ci stiamo lavorando... come alla tesi del dottorato alla quale ho gia' dato una struttura... vedremo. Ora bisogna lavorare sodo per riempire questa struttura e la voglia di scrivere e’ sotto le scarpe.
Un’altra novità e’ che mi sono iscritto al corso online per certificatore energetico degli edifici in Lombardia che mi ruba il tempo nei fine settimana, come scusa per non aver ancora scritto sul blog e’ abbastanza credibile?
Questa settimana andrò a Friburgo 2 giorni per seguire un mini corso per l’univerista’ e poi gia’ che ci sono mi fermo fino a domenica per pucciare il naso nella foresta nera e non vedo l'ora di arrivare!!!
Mentre il fine settimana successivo andro’ a congelare a Oslo (37 euro a/r con Ryanair, non abbiamo saputo resistere con i miei cuinquilini). Poi per Pasqua si rientra a casa e se si riesce si arriva in tempo per votare alle regionali.
Nulla e' cambiato, sempre di corsa.

Dear friends,
For those of you who were wondering if I was still alive, the answer is yes. Since my last email in Chirstmas time, more than two months have flown and a lot of things have happened.
The first and was an unexpected trip to the Holy Land, organized at the last minute to replace a guy in a Scout group of friends who couldn’t make it. It was for one week in early January when I experienced personally the contradictions and all the problems of this land. The tour was organised by AGESCI (the Italian association of Catholic scouts) exceptionally well, we had the opportunity to meet many people and different realities: form the Jew survived at Auschwitz to the Arab Catholics (the only Catholics in holy land), from the Jew Kibbutz to the hospital for Children in Bethlehem where the kids sometimes don’t receive in time the permission to cross the wall and get to Jerusalem in order to get the needed surgery.
The spiritual dimension of experience (like the hike in the desert of Judah form Jerusalem to Jericho) has been able to rekindle a little hope that you easily loose talking to people and looking around at the current situation.
Then I came back to Ireland, with the new Hungarian flatmate and already 5 guests in this 2010, we are in the high season! In order we welcomed Annaig (former French housemate at the time of my Erasmus), Javi (the brother of Ignacio) and Veronica (Scout from Milan), Tarcisio & Paolo (my dad & cousin) and the mother of Attila from Hungary. In the meantime I also spent 2 days in Brussels with my supervisor for an event of the European Commission about energy efficiency, looking for possible European partners for new research projects and also for possible useful contacts for myself if there won’t be enough money to stay in Galway longer after October. It is not easy but we're working on this... as I am working on my PhD thesis to which I have already given a structure... let’s see. Now I must work hard to fill this structure even though the motivation to write is very low.
Another news is that I've joined the online course to become an building energy rating assessor in Lombardia (my Italian region), this has stolen much time on the weekends, is it a creadible excuse to justify my silence on the blog?
This week I'm going to Freiburg 2 days to attend a mini course for the university and then I will stay until Sunday to have a look at city and the Black Forest. I cannot wait!
The following weekend I will be freezing in Oslo (37 euro round trip with Ryanair, we couldn’t resist in buying these thickets). Then it will be Easter and I’ll go back to Italy also to cote for the Regional elections. Nothing has changed, I am always running.

Cari amici,
dalla bianca e paralizzata Milano vi scrivo questa breve mail per aggiornarvi sulle mie avventure irlandesi e farvi i miei auguri di buon Natale e felice anno nuovo.
Il dottorato procede tra alti e bassi, il tempo passa e ormai devo iniziare a fare il punto della situazione e decidere come strutturare la mia tesi e capire cosa manca per completare il lavoro... a fine ottobre finisce la borsa di studio, quindi devo darmi una mossa in questi ultimi 10 mesi!
Non so se e’ la forza dell’abitudine ma devo ammettere che negli ultimi 4 mesi il tempo irlandese non e’ stato troppo difficile da sopportare... magari questo e’ dovuto a nuove amicizie che allietano la vita sociale e non lasciano molto tempo per pensare alle condizioni atmosferiche. C’é solo da sottolineare il picco di 3 settimane fa con mezza Irlanda allagata (compreso il centro di Cork) dovuto alle piogge torrenziali peggiori degli ultimi 40 anni.
La recessione continua a picchiare duro, visto che oltre ad un elevato numero di disoccupati e tagli di stipendio nel settore privato sono arrivati anche quelli nel settore pubblico con l’ultima finanziaria. C’é anche qualcuno che inizia a mettere in discussione la permanenza dell'Irlanda nell’area Euro... happy days!
La vita a casa procede molto bene con un clima famigliare, tranne per il fatto che io Ignacio e Marina abbiamo dovuto salutare la nostra adorabile Jaclyn, coinquilina americana che e’ ritornata in Pennsylvania. A Gennaio accoglieremo Attila, ragazzo ungherese.
Con i miei coinquilini abbiamo pensato di regalarvi un canto di natale (improvvisato) nelle 3 lingue, più qualche minuto di follia accompagnati da un saluto a tutti gli ospiti della nostra casa in questi 6 mesi e a i nuovi che verranno nel 2010. Lo trovate qui:

Dear Friends,
form the white and jammed Milan I am going to quickly update you about my last adventures in Ireland and wish you a merry Christmas and an happy new year.
The PhD proceeds with ups and downs and in terms of timeframe my scholarship will end next October, therefore I am organising the structure of the thesis and planning the remaining work as I have to hurry up a bit…
The weather hasn’t been too bad in the last 4 months, I am not sure whether it’s me who is getting used to it or it’s the new friendships who don’t leave me much spare time to notice and complain about it. However 3 weeks ago we had the biggest flood of the last 40 years with half of the country flooded (1 m of water in the city centre of Cork).
The recession is continuing to hit hard, after a really high number of unemployed and pay cuts in the private sector, with the last national budget a pay cut is going to hit hard all the employed in the public sector as well. There are also some rumours about Ireland difficulties in respecting the parameters to stay in the Euro area next year… happy days!
The life at home is going well with the usual familiar atmosphere; despite that me, Ignacio and Marina will sadly miss Jaclyn, our lovely American flatmate who headed back to Pennsylvania for good last week. However, a new flat mate is coming in January, his name is Attila and he is form Hungary.
Before Jaclyn left, we decided to record for you this Christmas song in our 3 languages (without practicing ;-), there is also a few minutes of craziness towards the end of the movie and special greetings to all the guest we have had and the new ones will come in 2010. Cari amici,
per quelli di voi che si stavano chiedendo che fine avessi fatto... rieccomi!
Dopo un’estate all’insegna di corse in lungo e in largo per il continente rieccomi ristabilito a Galway per il nuovo anno accademico. Tra le varie cose sono riuscito a vincere la lotteria dell’esame di stato di ingegneria quindi ora posso iscrivermi all’albo e firmare pratiche come le DIA, quindi se qualcuno di voi avesse bisogno di una firmetta per lavori edilizi, prima di spendere un sacco di soldi me lo faccia sapere....
Per il resto con la vita irlandese c’é da segnalare un nuovo assetto dell’appartamento in cui vivo, oltre a me ed Ignacio (amico spagnolo) ora ci sono la sua morosa che ha preso un anno di aspettativa dal lavoro e una studente americana (Jaclyn) che e’ qui per un semestre all’estero.
Piano piano riprendono tutte la attività come le danze irlandesi del martedì e gli ospiti si alternano a venirci a trovare in questo splendido appartamento vista mare.
Il dottorato procede con i suoi alti e bassi e con pecca che ora ci sposteranno in un nuovo ufficio molto più piccolo ma con altrettante persone... la crisi sta avendo i suoi effetti, molti disoccupati e molte richieste di dottorato in dipartimento. Siamo il doppio dei dottorandi che c’erano lo scorso anno.
Non mi dilungo se non per dirvi che vi aspetto a Galway numerosi per il 250esimo anniversario della Guinnes (giovedì prossimo) o per il proseguo di questo 2009-2010.
In ultimo aggiugno che dopo la bocciatura nel giugno 2008 il prossimo 2 ottobre si terrà in Irlanda un nuovo referendum sul trattato di Lisbona. Staremo a vedere se si ripeterà ciò che accadde nel 2002 per il trattato di Nizza quando dopo una prima bocciatura il trattato passò al secondo referendum. Nel prossimo mese di ottobre ci saranno anche il primo congresso e le primarie del PD. Per entrambi questi momenti di democrazia nell'augurarmi piena partecipazione e la scelta del meglio vi lascio con questa frase di Padre Maria Turoldo:
“Ogni mattina quando si leva il sole inizia un giorno che non ha mai vissuto nessuno. Abbiamo davanti a noi un tempo che vale la pena vivere, sarà un tempo di sfide dure e bellissime sarà il nostro nuovo giorno e noi lo vivremo!"

Dear friends,

many of you may have wondered what happened to my messages… I am back!
After a summer of travels around our continent I am back to Galway for the new academic year. Over the many things of this summer I have had time to give and luckily pass the exam to become a chartered engineer in Italy… that means that if you need a signature for an engineering project in my country you can refer to myself and see if I can help you out.
The Irish life is continuing with a new group living in our flat. Beside me and Ignacio this year we have also his girlfriend Marina who took a sabbatical year form job and also an American student (Jaclyn) who has got the 3rd room. Little by little I am restarting my activities like the Irish dances and several friends have come to visit us in our wonderful flat with bay view.
The PhD is proceeding and going up and down as usual, the news is that they are going to move us in a new smaller office because the number of postgraduate has doubled this year (mainly because of the crisis).
I just want to remind you that this year is the 250th anniversary of the Guinnes (this Thursday is the exact day), so I will wait you for celebrating here in Galway for this 2009-2010.
At last few words about the Lisbon treaty: in Ireland there was a referendum in June 2008 when it was rejected. Now they are repeating it on the 2nd of October hoping in a different result like it happened in 2002 with the Nice treaty. In October there will be also the first congress and primary vote with the election of the new secretary of the “Partito Deocratico”, let’s hope that for both these events in a high participation and for the best choice.
I leave you with few words of an Italian religious poet: “Every morning when the sun rises, it starts a day that nobody has lived before. We have in front of us a time that is worth to be lived; it will be a time of beautiful and difficult challenges. It will be our new day and we will live it!”

Carissimi,
non ci crederete ma qui a Galway e’ 1 settimana che c’e’ il sole e per 4 giorni di fila si sono superati (di poco) i 20 gradi. Domanica e lunedi’ abbiamo fatto il bagno! Eh gia’ l’estate Irlandese (che ufficialmente inizia il primo di giugno) e’ iniziata, siccome finira’ presto pero’ io ho pensato bene di tornare in Italia questo fine settimana.
Ovviamente la scusa ufficiale per il rientro sono le elezioni europee per le quali sono gia’ preparato al peggio... purtroppo :-(
Per il resto ho cambiato casa ed ora vivo in centro in un appartamento con il mio amico e collega spagnolo Ignacio e un amico italiano (marco) conosciuto piu’ di recente. Questo cambiamento ha notevolmente elevato la qualità di vita domestica e in generale. Diciamo che ci voleva, soprattutto considerando che la scorsa settimana avrei tirato il computer giu’ dalla finestra a causa di frustranti problemi modellazione per il mio dottorato. Comunque si procede.
In questi giorni si e’ fermata a Galway la Volvo Ocean Race, una regata di barche a vela che sta finendo il giro del mondo, per l’occasione ci sono 10 giorni di concerti in piazza e attivita’ varie organizzate sotto casa.
Non penso di avervi mai detto che la crisi qui in Irlanda si sente in modo impressionante, il motivo e’ che dopo una crescita spaventosa negli ultimi 15 anni (Celtic Tiger) lo scorso anno era iniziato il rallentamento e quest’anno la crisi internazionale ha influito in modo pesante nella riduzione di posti dei lavoro. Un amico architetto a Cork ha visto ridurre il numero di colleghi del suo team da 9 a 2 e tra loro c’era gente con famiglia e mutuo da pagare... come loro molti altri che non essendo irlandesi hanno optato per il rientro in patria (Italia, Spagna...) dove purtroppo le cose non stanno molto meglio.
Nei prossimi due mesi si prospettano un po’ di spostamenti: un incontro per un progetto di ricerca europeo a Goteborg e una conferenza a Glasgow, poi il campo con i lupetti a luglio e una vacanza probabilmente in giro per il sud Italia ancora da pensare e organizzare.

Dear folks,
you will not believe that here in Galway has been a sunny week and the temperature has gone over 20 degrees for 4 days in a row. Sunday and Mondaywe were also swimming in the see. The Irish summer has started! But as the autumn is probably around the corner, today I am flying to Italy. The real reason is that I will go voting for the European elections and for the province of Milano.
Despite what he has done (abroad you know it better than we do in Italy), Berlusconi is probably (and sadly) going to confirm (and maybe increase) the result of last year with a support around 40% of the voters. Unbelievably sore!
Anyway 3 weeks ago I moved to a new house with Ignacio, the Spanish friend and colleague, and Marco an Italian friend that we have met here. The house is really cool apartment and in the city centre and this has increased significantly my quality life. This was in a sense needed after a week during which I was about to throw my laptop out of the window because of modeling problems for my PhD.
I am not sure if I have told you how bad is the economy here in Ireland this year. Last year it was not growing anymore as it did in the previous 15 years of Celtic Tiger during which EU and American companies had invested a lot here. With the financial crisis everything collapsed and a lot of people lost their job and went back to their countries. One architect friend in Cork has lost 70% of colleagues in his company some of them with mortgage and family.
In the next two months I will have to travel a bit between Italy, Gothenburg for a European research project and Glasgow for a conference. I will also have my holidays (mid July – mid August): the camp with the scouts and a trip to south of Italy that still need to be organized.

Cari amici,
rieccomi a darvi qualche notizia dall’ancora freddo nord ovest (oggi c’erano 10 gradi).
La vita Galway procede con un lento ma presente incremento delle amicizie, l’unico problema e’ che spesso sono amicizie con persone che vengono a studiare l’inglese per brevi periodi e poi ripartono. Il punto di ritrovo sono le danze Irlandesi alle quali, sulle orme di mia sorella, mi sono fatto prendere un sacco. Ogni martedi il nostro teacher John insegna a gruppi misti il connemara set... spettacolo!
Il dottorato procede abbastanza bene soprattutto perche’ ho avuto una valutazione formale della -facolta’ che mi ha approvato il lavoro svolto e il programma proposto... dovrei finire in 1 anno e mezzo, massimo 2, speriamo bene!
Domani rientrero’ in Italia per la settimana santa per un totale di 9 giorni per un po’ di caldo e di sole (spero!). Dopodicche’ al rientro in terra Irlandese sara’ la volta della ricerca di una nuova casa, L’obbiettivo e’ spostarsi piu’ in centro e soprattutto con persone con le quali mi possa trovare meglio si in termini di pulizia che di compagnia.
Per il resto non mi resta che augurarvi personalmente buona pasqua nell’attesa di vedervi e o sentirvi presto.

Dear friends,
I am back writing you some news for the still cold north west (today there were 10 degrees C).
The life in Galway proceeds with a slow increasing of the number of friends, the only problem is that often these friendships are with people who are studying English only for short periods and after they go back to their countries. The meeting point is the Irish dances where I started to go to, following the slipstream of my sister. Every Tuesday night our teacher John shows us (a mix group of foreigners) the Connemara set… amazing!
The PhD is proceeding at normal pace also because I finally had a formal evaluation of the faculty that approved the work I have done and the plan for the next months (ca 20 left)... let’s hope.
Tomorrow I am heading back to Italy for the holy week for a total of 9 days of warm and hopefully weather. Afterwards, once back to Ireland, I will start again the house hunting with the goal to find a better place in terms of cleaning and company.
I finally want to whish you all happy Easter with the hope of meeting or hearing from you soon.

Heila’,

un saluto a tutti da Galway (Irlanda) dove ormai mi trovo da piu’ di un mese e mi sono quasi stabillizzato. Tra trovare casa ed un periodo intenso con l’universita’ sono stato preso ed ho un po’ latitato con i miei aggiornamenti.
La cittadina’ di Glaway e piu’ piccola di Cork, che gia’ mi sembrava piccola ma la posizione e’ migliore in termini di paesaggio (siamo direttamente sull’oceano qui).
La casa che ho trovato e nella quale mi fermero’ fino a maggio non e’ male, ho la mia camera con bagno e condivido la cucina co una coppia di irlandesi e una ragazza americana del Maine. Diciamo che purtroppo le mie aspettative circa la pulizia non coincidono con le loro e probabilmente anche per questo motivo a maggio cerchero’ un altro posto... la cucina sembra quella di un’ostello mal tenuto. C’e’ da dire che almeno la casa e’ nuova e che quindi non posso lamentarmi.
Il lavoro procede bene e la vita sociale inizia ad avere qualche flebile segno di vita nonostante ricominciare sia sempre difficile. Per fortuna ad accogliermi c’era il mio amico e collega Ignacio (di Cadice).
Ovviamente siete tutti invitati a venirmi a trovare approfittando delle offerte ryanair... vi aspetto! Il primo ospite e’ gia’ venuto (mio Papa’) ed un pacchetto turistico di 3 giorni con giro in connemara e alle cliffs of Moher e’ gia’ pronto.
Il prossimo fine settimana saro’ in Italia e non mi spiacerebbe approfittare del carnevale milanese per andare a Siena/Lucca dove non sono mai stato... se la cosa puo’ interessarvi battete un colpo!

Ciao,
greetings to all of you from Galway (Ireland) where I have been in the 40 days and where I am almost settled now. This first period between house hunting and many things to do at the university I was really busy and I haven’t had much time to update you with my news.
The town is smaller than Cork, which already looked small to me, but the position is better for the landscape: here we are right on the Atlantic.
The house that I have found and where I will stay until May is ok. I have an ensuite room and I am sharing the kitchen with an Irish couple and a girl form US (Maine). The only problem is that my expectations on the cleaning are not the same than theirs… sometimes it looks like I am living in a not well kept hostel… I’ll probably move out in May. At least the house is very new so I can’t complain.
The PhD is proceeding and the social life is beginning to move at a really slow pace but at least it does begin. The good point was that here there was my friend (and colleague) Ignacio to welcome me.
You are all more than welcome to come and visit me taking advantage of the cheap Ryanair flights!
The first guest is already arrived (my father) and a 3 days touristic package (Connemara+Cliffs of Moher) has been already tested with him.
Next weekend I’ll be in Italy and I’d like to go to Siena and Lucca… if you want to join you are more than welcome!

In questa notte di Natale vi scrivo per farvi i miei piu’ cari auguri. L’ultimo mese, che e’ stato l’ultimo di questa grande esperianza in California, e’ volato in poco tempo. Tra le tante cose c’e’ stato un veloce e intenso fine settimana a Seattle e Vancouver.
Poi c’e’ stata la nomina di Stven Chu, premio Nobel per la fisica e direttore del LBL (centro di ricerca dove stavo lavorando) come Segretary of Energy per il governo Obama. Mi sento proprio fortunato ad averci parlato di persona qualche settimana prima, quando lui mi ha dato contro per non aver attraversato sulle strisce pedonali (solito italiano!) e, durante un incontro plenario con tutti i dipendenti (circa 3000), ha citato il mio caso (per fortuna non conosce il mio nome) come esempio di mancata attenzione sulle norme di sicurezza... ora mi sento importante.
Nel frattempo anche sta volta non e’ stato facile lasciare un ambiente al quale ci si era affezionati. Da gennaio si torna in Irlanda per iniziare una nuova avvetura in quel di Galway, appena trovo casa siete tutti i benvenuti!

During this Christmas night I whish you a Merry Christmas and an happy new year. The last month of this great experience in California has flown really quickly!
Overall I was a weekend in Seattle and Vancouver (intense but much worth!).
Lately Steven Chu, winner of the physics Nobel Prize and director of the LBL (research center where I was working), was appointed as Secretary of Energy of the Obama’s govern. I feel really lucky also because I had the chance to speak with him in person a couple of weeks before. It was when he was cursing at me because I crossed the road without passing on the zebra (I am the classic of Italian laziness!). The most important thing was that he used my example in the plenary session about safety with more than 3000 people attending. I was really lucky because he didn’t ask my name and he couldn’t recognize me anymore thanks to a new short cut.
Anyway at the end I left Berkeley and California and I must nostalgically confess that was not so easy to leave all those people that I had been living with for the last 4 months… but this is part of the life I have chosen for the last year: always moving form one place to another. From the 13 of January I’ll be back to Ireland and you will be more than welcome to visit me as soon as I’ll get an accommodation for myself.

Dopo il messaggio del 13 gennaio scorso quando vi annunciavo il mio sostegno ad Obama, il sogno ora e’ diventato realta’! Adesso inizia la vera sfida.
Nonostante le tante cose da fare, ho cercato di vivere il piu’ possibile gli ultimi giorni di campagna elettorale. Sono stato due volte al centro logistico della campagna elettorale del PD dove un sacco di persone si recavano con il proprio cellulare per chiamare negli stati in bilico a convincere la gente ad andare a votare per Obama in questa elezione storica. Avevamo un foglio prestampato con il discorso da fare, a me sono capitati l’Ohio e il Nevada.
Poi la notte dei risultati qui a Berkeley si sono riempite le strade di gente in festa, per questo vento nuovo che soffia e che non si sentiva dai tempi di Kennedy, e’ stato significativo sentire da tanti giovani americani che per la prima volta nella loro vita hanno sentito l’orgoglio di essere statunitensi.
Scusate il ritardo dell’aggiornamento ma dopo le elezioni sono partito per il ponte del veteran day e sono stato a San Diego e nella vicina Baja California (in Mexico). Appena dopo il confine gli orizzonti di vita delle persone cambiano drasticamente come il paesaggio circostante fatto di baraccopoli fuori dalla grade citta’ di Tijuana, la sporcizia e la pressione che si sente nel camminare lungo le strade dove tutti cercano di vendere qualcosa ai Gringos. Non e’ stato proprio un fine settimana da spiaggia ma ogni tanto fa bene ricordarsi che l’80% degli abitanti di questo pianeta vivono in una realta’ completamente diverso dalla nostra.
Ora mi godo il sole e i 24 gradi.

After the message I sent on January the 13th where I was stating my endorsement to Obama, the dream has just become reality! Now the real challenge is started.
Although I was busy I tried to get involved for the last days of campaigning volunteering for the democrats. I went to the Oakland electoral centre of the democract where many people where going with their own cell phone to call in the states where the result would have been close in order to get more people out for voting Obama. I called in Ohio and Nevada, it was really a good experience.
The night of the results here in Berkeley the crowd gathered in the street for a big party to celebrate this positive atmosphere that was missing since the time of Kennedy. It was impressive to speak with young Americans who were proud of being US citizen for the first time.
I am sorry for this delay in the news for the elections but last weekend I went for a couple of days to San Diego and to Baja California (Mexico) thanks to the Veterans Day holiday. Straight after the border the reality changes drastically, I was really impressed by the slums of Tijuana and by the pressure I was feeling because all the people in the street were trying to sell me anything. It was not properly an holiday on the beach but sometimes it’s good to experience that 80% of the population on the earth doesn’t live like us.
Now I am enjoying the sun and the 24 degrees.

Rieccoci con gli aggiornamenti sulle mie avventure,
tra le cose salienti da dire in questo messaggio ci sono l’aggionamento sul clima elettorale, un weekend lungo (3 giorni) a LA e uno spettacolo nel quale ho cantato con altri italiani.
Andiamo in ordine, per le elezioni lo scorso lunedi’ (20 ottobre) era il termine per registrarsi al voto (presso uffici pubblici o direttamente presso i partiti), chi non lo ha fatto non potra’ votare. Il clima qui a Berkeley e California e’ decisamente per Obama (quindi questo e’ uno stato “blu”, mentre i rossi sono i repubblicani), nonostante il governatore di qui sia il repubblicano Arnold Schwarzenegger. Siccome in alcuni stati vicini il risultato non e’ affatto scontato il Partito Democratico sta organizzando viaggi in Nevada e Arizona per fare campagna attiva in loco.
Nel weekend a LA (Los Angeles) che dista da San Francisco circa 600 km abbiamo viaggiato lungo la highway 1 attraverso alcune localita’ piu’ o meno famose come Santa Barbara, le spiagge di Malibu’ e Santa Monica. Come al solito e’ stata una tirata (poco tempo e tante cose da vedere) diciamo che finalmente ho potuto vedere la California che tutti sognano ma che qui a Berkeley e’ offuscata dalla nebbia che sale dalla baia di San Francisco. Oltre a fare il bagno sulle spiagge di Baywacth ci siamo goduti una veloce passeggiata sulla walk of fame di Hollywood e le spettacolari vedute sulla costa californiane offerte dalla highway 1 tutta la costa.
Domenica 12 e’ stata la volta della Sunday Supper che qui alla I-House (dove vivo) e’ un cena di gala organizzate per celebrare la pace e l’integrazione delle diverse culture che vivono qui. Durante la cena era possibile esibirsi con dei numeri di spettacolo. Insieme ad altri 5 italiani coraggiosi ci siamo lanciati a cantare Bella Ciao (storica) e La societa’ dei magnaccioni (folk). Il mese di prove ininterrotte ci ha pagato con un buon successo, coronato dalle parole del direttore dell’I-House che ha concluso il discorso finale con due parole: Bella Ciao. Nel frattempo ieri ho fatto una capatina a Sacramento (capitale della California) con la famiglia che mi ospita.

Here we are with the last updates with my adventures oversea,
the main things to tell this time are the election atmosphere, the trip to LA and the show where I was singing with other Italians.
Last Monday (20th) was the deadline to register to vote for the presidential election at public offices or directly at the parties, whoever is not registered now won’t vote. Here in Berkeley and overall in California is pro Obama (it looks like a “blue” state), even if the governor is the Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. As in close states the result will be really tied, the Democratic Party is organizing field trips to Arizona and Nevada for campaigning there.
During my weekend to Los Angeles (600 km away form San Francisco) we drove toward south along the highway 1 passing through Santa Barbara, Malibu’ Beach and Santa Monica. It was really quick and maybe too fast but it was good to see the California that we normally always see in the movies different form the foggy bay area near San Francisco. As highlights I report the bath in the ocean, the walk on the walk of fame in Hollywood and the quick drive through Beverly Hills.
Sunday the 12th there was the Sunday Supper here at the I-House a formal dinner organized to celebrate the intercultural spirit of the house. During the dinner I sang with other Italians two songs (Bella Ciao and La societa’ dei magnaccioni), after one month of practice the final result was not bad and the director finished his final speech saying Bella Ciao!

Buon giorno a tutti,
qui negli US siamo in piena campagna elettorale e crisi finanziaria, venerdi’ scorso ho partecipato alla proiezione del dibattito tra Mc Cain ed Obama, segnalo due cose a riguardo: Obama sembra sia andato meglio (i sondaggi lo danno oggi con un vantaggio medio del 5%, la cosa che piu’ mi ha dato fastidio pero’ e’ che il leader democratico ha detto per ben due volte che le priorita’ in politica estera, dopo il ritiro dall’Iraq, e’ prendere e UCCIDERE Bin Laden, evidentemente gli americani vogliono sentirselo dire. Sapendo come la penso potete immaginare quanto mi sia spiaciuto sentire quelle parole... ovviamente quelle di Mc Cain MOLTO peggio quindi rimango ottimista con il motto “yes we can”dei democratici.
Circa la questione Iran Mc Cain ha detto che gli US devono collaborare con Germania, Francia e Gran Bretagna per mettere delle sanzioni, l’italia non e’ stata nominata. Direi che la cosa e’ strana perche’ una settimana fa circa Berlusconi aveva detto che grazie a lui il nostro paese e’ uno dei migliori alleati degli USA, evidentemente stava scherzando... grazie Silvio per l’ennesima battuta! Comunque poteva andare peggio visto che lo stesso Mc Cain ha detto che non e’ sicuro di voler incontrare Zapatero che evidentemente e’ troppo estremista per i suoi gusti.
La scorsa settimana ho conosciuto la mia host Family alla quale sono stato assegnato per un programma di scambio al quale mi sono iscritto. Ogni tanto ci si incontra e si fa qualcosa insieme, per ora siamo stati con la host mother a San Francisco alla scoperta di posti poco conosciuti e poi fuori a cena insieme al marito e alla figlia maggiore di 21 anni.
Ieri sono stato a vedere la partita di Fooball americano dei Golden Bears la squadra dell’universita’. Nonostante la durata di 4 ore della partita con miriadi di intervalli (ci sono 4 tempi da 15 minuti effettivi ciascuno e un’azione dura in media colo 7 secondi) e’ stato interessante vivere l’atmosfera americana con famiglie allo stadio, hot dog, banda sbandieratori e ragazze pon pon (come nei film).
In univesrita’ tutto procede normalmente, a casa ogni tanto sento la nostalgia di potermi cucinare quello che voglio, anche se devo ammettere che trovare sempre tutto pronto e’ una comodita’ (peccato per gli orari, la mensa chiude alle 20).

Hello everyone,
here in the US we living both the stress for the financial crisis and the electoral campaign, last Friday I attended to the debate between Obama and Mc Cain. I have 2 remarks: it looks like Obama performed better (now is 5% ahead in the polls). The things that I was bothered the most of was Obama saying twice that the priority in foreign politic is that, after the withdrawal of the troops from Iraq, the US army has to catch and KILL Bin Laden: evidently this is what the Americans want to hear from their new president. I guess that you know what I think in regard of that, so you can imagine how I was feeling sad. Anyway Mc Cain was much worse so I am still optimistic with the democratic motto: “yes we can”.
Regarding Iran Mc Cain was talking about how to find an agreement with other allied countries speaking about France, Germany and UK but not Italy: that’s kind of strange because our prime minister Berlusconi said, just last week, that Italy now is one of the best partner of the US thanks to him (perhaps it was a joke… he is really good in joking). Anyway it could have been worse as Mc Cain also said that he is not properly sure whether or not he would meet Zapatero, maybe because the Spanish prime minister looks to extremist.
Last week I met my host family that I have been assigned to, within the friendship program that I signed up when I arrived. Basically this program consist in meeting a family and going around with them with a cultural exchange perspective. I was in San Francisco with the host mother and out for a dinner with her husband and the oldest daughter.
Yesterday I was at the American Football game of the Golden Bears (the team of the university). Even though the overall duration of the game was kind of long (4 periods of effective 15 minutes each – for a total of 4 hours) it was interesting to breath the atmosphere at the stadium with the band the cheer girls the hot dogs (as in the films).
My research is going on well and the life at the International house too, a part the fact that sometimes I miss to cook my meals.

Rieccodi a scrivere da oltremare,
finalmente mi sono definitivamnte sistemato nell’International house, uno studentato dove staro’ fino al rientro di dicembre. Diciamo che il clima qui a Berkeley non e’ poi cosi’ male, non fai mai troppo caldo di giorno e alla sera bisogna coprirsi, mentre su san francisco (da qui si vede la baia) c’e’ sembre la nebbia dovuta al freddo delle acque del pacifico che fanno condensare l’umidita’ dell’aria che viene dall’entroterra.
Ho appena finito i miei 10 giorni di vacanza americana con mia sorella Mara e mio cugino Paolo nei quali abbiamo percorso 3000 km con il seguente itinerario (Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon e Big Sur)... Spettacolo! Sul blog metto qulache foto.
Ora mi devo mettere sotto con il lavoro al Berkeley Lab, il centro di ricerca dell’universita’ che sta sopra una collina presso il quale portero’ avanti il lavoro che faccio in Irlanda accompiando il tutto con delle collaboraizioni sui progeti locali, sperando di imparare qualcosa.
Immagino che anche per molti di voi le vacanze siano gia’ finite o finiranno a breve, vi aguro quindi una buona ripresa e vi lascio con le 3 cose che piu’ mi hanno colpito sppena arrivato negli US:
1- le strade sono piene di senza tetto, mi hanno detto che san francisco e’ la 15 citta’ per numero di abitanti e la 5 per numero di senzatetto. Quando Regan era governatore della california ha chiuso le case di accolgienza e le condizioni permettono alla gente di vivere per strada.
2- Qui sembra di essere in asia nel senso che si incontrano un sacco di asiatici in giro per strada, e quando dico un sacco vuol dire almeno 1 su 2, considerando che molti di loro hanno solo i lineamenti asiatici ma che sono americani.
3- Qui e’ tutto esageratemnte piu’ grosso che in Europa, dai frigoriferei alle macchine (non ci sono le utilitarie) fino alle porzioni di cibo: l’altra sera ho ordinato una coppa di gelato e me ne hanno portato piu’ di mezzo chilo... nonstante non avessi cenato non sono riuscito a finirlo. Gli amici americani hanno detto ironicamente, di non stare male per finirlo, che qui diamo negli States e quello che non ti va lo butti! Per essere onesti un punto positivo e’ che nei ristoranti pero’, se vuoi, ti danno una scatola a fine pasto per portare il cibo avanzato.

Ci sarebbero un sacco di altre cose ma le lascio agli altri messaggi.

I am back to write from oversea,
Finally I am settled into the I-House, the student accommodation where I’ll be staying until Christmas. Let’s say that here in Berkeley the weather is not so bad, it’s warm during the day and cool at night (jumper or jacket required). On the city of San Francisco (that we can se from this side of the bay) there is always fog, due to the cold water of the pacific that cools down the air and condensates the moisture.
I have just finished my 10 days of holidays in the US, during which I have been travelling with my sister Mara and my cousin Paolo. We drove for 3000 km passing: Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon e Big Sur)… Amazing! Also because for part of the trip we where together with Annaig and Nico (a couple of French friends). On the Blog I will put few pictures.
Now is time to start working seriously at the Berkeley lab, I guess that also for most of you the holidays are almost finished, so I wish you hall a good come back to work!
I write just 3 of the things that most impressed me here in the states:
1- in the streets there is plenty of homeless, I have been told that Frisco is the 15th biggest city in the US for population but is the 5th for homeless. When Regan was governor of California he closed down the assistance communities of the state, the weather also facilitates this phenomenon.
2-here it seams to be in Asia, in the sense that one every second person that you meet in the street looks like Asian, most of them are maybe Americans citizens but it is still impressive.
3- Here everything is incredibly bigger than in Europe: from the fridges to the cars passing by the meal portions. I took an ice cream cup and they brought me more than 500 grams of ice cream, I wasn’t able to finish it even though I didn’t have dinner that night. An American friends ironically said that I should bother to that because we are in the states where aeverithing that you don’t want can be trown away. A good point though is that at the restaurant, at the end of the dinner they give you a boxe to take home your food left if you want so.

There would be many other things to say but I will tell them in the next messages.

Buon giorno a tutti,

dopo 3 settimane frenetiche in Italia, domenica 27 sono tornato dal campo dei lupetti (in provincia di Biella) e lunedi’ 28 mi sono imbarcato sul volo per San Francisco (11 ore di aereo da Francoforte) dove mi fermer’ fino a Natale.

Ad aspettarmi oltre a 13 gradi e la nebbia c’era James (collega irlandese che ha vissuto qui per 2 anni e che ora e’ tornato per 1 mese e mezzo) che mi ha dato uno strappo fino a Berkeley, mi e’ sembrato di fare un tuffo nella Milano che si vive in pieno autunno visto anche che le anche la luce del sole se n’era gia andata alle 19.40.

Per il resto ora partecipo ad una conferenza (SimBuild 2008) che inizia domattina e che mi terra’ impegnato per tutta la settimana. Le prime cose da fare sono poi quelle buricratiche tra cui valutare l’opportunita’ di aprire un conto in banca, cercare una casa dove stare dal 2 al 10 agosto dopo la conferenza e prima che mi diano la stanza che ho prenotato nello studentato e la necessita’ di comprarsi un cellulare (qui i dual band non funzionano).

Qui ci sono 9 ore di differenza con l’Italia e per questo motivo sta sera non sono uscito con gli altri perche’ devo ancora recuperare lo sballottamento per il fuso orario (jet lag in inglese).

Rimaniamo che ci sentiamo presto...

Hi to everyone,

after 3 weeks in Italy, Sunday the 27^th I was back from the scout camp and following day I left to California. (11 hours of flight between Frankfurt and San Francisco). I’ll be back to Italy by Christmas.

Yesterday there were, a part of James my Irish colleague who had been here for 2 years already and who will stay for 2months this summer, fog and 13 degrees C only; if we consider also that when I landed it was already dark (at 8 pm) I was feeling like in autumn already.

Now I am attending to the SimBuild conference that will take me busy until Saturday. By the way now I need all sort put all the administrative and bureaucratic stuff in order to get started, as the bank account and the new mobile phone that I need to buy as here you need at least a 3 band phone as the 2 band is not supported by the network.

Now I am still tired as here there are 9 hours of Jet lag with Italy and 8 for the most of the other west European countries.

Ciao, sono a Dublino dove ho appena finito il colloquio presso l’ambasciata americana per ottenere il visto (che in inglese si dice VISA... peccato che al posto che funzionare come una carta di credito, mi sia costato 150€).

La vita a Cork procede bene con il giro di amici che si consolida e si evolve, c’e’ chi arriva e chi parte soprattutto ora nel periodo estivo... a proposito finalmente riesco ad ospitare qualcuno dall’italia: domani arriva Giulia un’amica scout di Roma che si ferma a Cork per 2 mesi di iglese full immersion.

Del tempo non posso lamentarmi, nell’ultimo mese ha senza dubbio piovuto di piu’ nel nord-ovest dell’italia che in Irlanda, speriamo che duri fino a fine mese.

Dall’ultimo messaggio questi gli eventi salienti per la cronaca:

- un weekend a Liverpool (Capitale Europea della cultura 2008) con Tim un’amico tedesco che ha girato il mondo e che ora e’ a Cork per il dottorato con la morosa (Camilla) che e’ brasiliana e ha il passaporto italiano per via del nonno. 2 giorni pieni di cose da vedere, musei e gallerie d’arte gratis, il quartiere dei Beatles, la penisola del Wirral e la 5 cattedrale piu’ grande nel modo. Diciamo che ne e’ valsa la pena soprattutto per i 10 euro del biglietto aereo a/r.

- Sabato scorso abbiamo organizzato 3 macchine per andare a scalare la montagna piu’ alta d’Irlanda (1038 m) che per niente si chiama CarrauntooHILL. Tempo discreto, buona visuale (Beara, Kerry and Dingle peninsula) e ottima compagnia.

Per il resto tutto bene considerando anche che il gruppo della messa domenicale si sta allargndo, oltre ai soliti (io, Enrico il veronese e Tim) si sono aggiunti altri due ragazzi di cui uno capo scout di Arezzo (Francesco) a Cork per 2 mesi per un corso di inglese. Dopo la messa di solito pranzo assieme e partita di pallone.

In ultimo da sottolineare come a Cork si vivano intensamente gli europei... ogni sera c’e’ una partita da vedere con tifoserie sempre accese. Peccato per l’Italia, anche se gli olandesi si sono presi la rivincita dopo l’eliminazione in semifinale di 8 anni fa per merito di Toldo... speriamo nelle prossime!

Sta sera arrivo in italia perche’ il 16 e il 17 partecipero’ in qualita’ di portaborse uffficiale del mio supervisore irlandese ad un incontro di lavoro al politecnico per un progetto europeo (Building EQ) del quale lui e’ osservatore ufficiale.

Appuntamento quindi per chi puo’ per Martedi’ 17 in piazza duomo alle 20.30 per la partita Italia-Francia!

Oggi si vota il referendum per il trattato di lisbona e i sondaggi danno le due parti molto vicine, speriamo!

Hi lads,

I am in Dublin now where I have just finished the interview at the US embassy for getting the VISA, the problem is that, a part of the name it is not a credit card and I had to pay 150€ to apply for it.

The Irish life is proceeding well with the group of friends that improves and evolves at the same time, mainly now with the summer period.

The weather has been really nice, considering that I am in Ireland, for the last 3 weeks, moreover if I compare it with the Italian one: basically a lot rain since the beginning of May.

2 things to report after the last messge:

- one weekend in Liverpool (European Capital of Culture 2008) together with Tim a German friend who has travelled almost all the world and now is studying for a PhD in Cork with his Brazilian girlfriend Camilla who is also Italian thanks to her grandfather. Museums and art galleries for free, the Wirral peninsula, the Beatles area and the 5^th biggest cathedral in the world. It was really worth to be visited, moreover for the only 10 € for the return ticket.

- Last Saturday we organized a tour to climb the highest mountain in Ireland (1038 m.) the CarrauntuoHILL (self explanatory name). The weather was ok, the view form the top was nice (Beara, Kerry and Dingle peninsula) and the crew was better.

All the rest it’s fine considering also that the group of young attending the mass on Sunday has been enlarging, from the usual 3 (Me, Enrico and Tim) last Sunday we were in 5. After the mass usually we have lunch together and after football match.

In cork now as all around Europe we are living the Eurocup fever with at least one match per day, pity for Italy, even tough Holland has got a fair revenge after we bate them in semifinal 8 years ago when they where hosting the tournament.

Tonight I am flying to Milano in order to attend a meeting at the Politecnico (my previous university) on Monday and Tuesday with my Irish supervisor about a europena project (BuildingEQ)... what luck, in my own city!

Hopefully I’ll watch the match Italy-France in Piazza del Duomo a Milano (main square) we will see how it is going to be…

Today the Irish are voting for the referendum regarding the Lisbon treaty… let’s hope!

Good for Ireland, good for Europe... vote YES!

Un saluto a tutti dalla verde e per due giorni consecutivi soleggiata Irlanda... incredibile a dirsi, a festeggiare la prima domenica di estate (qui inizia il primo maggio, non so ancora il perche’) ci ha pensato il sole.
Diciamo che e’ da un po’ che non mi faccio vivo... la batosta elettorale mi ha messo ko per un po’ e gli impegni vari ci hanno messo del loro per non farmi scivere.
L’argomento che va per la maggiore qui Irlanda in questo periodo riguarda il trattato di Lisbona firmato dai primi misnistri europei lo scorso dicemebre. Il trattato propone, sotto forma diversa, molti dei contenuti proposti dalla costituzione europea gia’ bocciata dalla Francia nel 2005. Se in Italia, come nelgi altri paesi, la cosa e’ passata in sordina, in Irlanda e’ scoppiato un polverone perche’ la costituzione Irlandese prevede che per il ratifica del trattato sia necessaria l’approvazione con un referendum popolare. Il testo propone una nuova organizzazione istituzionale del quadro dell’unione con:

- un parlamento piu’ forte, almeno quanto il consiglio (dove sono rappresentati i governi nazionali)

- la necessita’ di una doppia maggioranza (numero di stati e numero di abitanti) per l’approvazione dei provvedimenti in seno al consiglio

- una commissione (l’attuale governo europeo) dipendente dall’esito delle elezioni europee

- un richiamo ai valori fondandi e ai diritti prommossi dall’unione

- la nuova figura di alto rappresentante della politica estera europea

Certo e’ che abbiamo bisogno di un’Europa piu’ forte capace di darsi regole e di proporre un modello di sviluppo nuovo, basato sullo stato sociale, a questo mondo che sembra monopolizzato dagli interessi e dal capitale.
Non e’ una questione di SE accettare il trattato ma una questione di COME garantire che l’Europa una volta piu’ forte, sia veramente un modello nuovo, alternativo e solidale!
ll prossimo anno ci saranno le elezioni del parlamento europeo e il tema verra’ approfondito anche in Italia ma e’ interessante iniziare a farsi un’idea. (http://europa.eu/lisbon_treaty/glance/index_it.htm)

Per il resto il dottorato procede, sono gia’ passati 6 mesi e la fase iniziale di sola lettura sembra lontana, anche se nonostante un paio di idee che si stanno (speriamo) consolidando, di programmi dettagliati per i prossimi 3 anni e mezzo ancora non ce ne sono. L’unico punto fisso sembrano i 5 mesi da passare a Berkeley (fine luglio – Natale).

Il giro di amici trasversale tra universita’, gruppo di Taize e amici degli amici spesso mi tiene occupato anzi ultimamente faccio fatica a stare dietro a tutto e tutti... ieri grande giornata di sole con partita a calcio al parco con irlandesi e un sacco di stranieri: francesi spagnoli, tedeschi, polacchi, un coreano, un curdo e africani vari, i quali dopo 2 ore di partita hanno continuato a giocare come delle macchine per almeno altre 2 ore.

A meta’ giugno dovrei fare un salto a Milano, il rientro estivo invece sara’ verso inizio luglio... se qualcuno vuole fare un salto qui nel frattempo e’ piu’ che benvenuto, in alternativa speriamo di riuscire ad incontrarci a giugno o luglio.

Viva l’Italia, e speriamo che il nuovo presidente del consiglio lavori per il bene del paese, un abbraccio,

Hello everybody,

from the green and almost sunny Ireland (two consecutive days of sun… incredible). May be the reason is because yesterday was the first Sunday of summer that here starts on the 1^st of May.

I have been without writing for a long time but it’s due to the depression for the result of the elections and even because once back in Cork I have been quite busy.

One of the main topics here in Ireland is the referendum regarding the Lisbon treaty signed by all the prime ministers of the member states last December. The treaty introduces in a different way the rules that were in the European Constitution blocked by the French (2005).

As the Irish constitution imposes the referendum for the ratification, now everybody is speaking about it. In few points the new treaty proposes:

- a stronger parliament

- the double majority in the council (number of member states and number of citizens)

- a closer link between the commission and the European elections

- a greater emphasis on the main values of the Union and human rights promotion

- a new high representative for the Union in foreign affairs

Anyway I think that we need a stronger Europe because only in this way we would be able to propose to the world a new and fair development model based on the welfare state, as in a certain sense we have in Europe.

It’s not a matter of IF but a matter of HOW the stronger Europe will guarantee to propose this new fair model to the world. The European election will be next year and this will be certainly an important focus. (For information: http://europa.eu/lisbon_treaty/glance/index_en.htm)

The PhD is proceeding well (6 months have already passed) even if a clear picture of what I am going to do in the next years is not properly defined yet. A sure thing at the moment is the period in Berkeley that will be from the end of July to Christmas.

The rest of the Irish life is fine as the number of relationships has significantly increased as much as I feel really busy… perfect!

Yesterday soccer game with 20 people form al around Europe and the world at the end I was wreck.

If you want to visit me in Cork, take into account that I will probably leave Ireland by the beginning of July.

Cari amici,
questa volta scrivendovi non posso che fare rifermiento al fatto che il 13 e 14 Aprile l'Italia unita scegliera' il proprio futuro, io scegliero' il Partito Democratico e vi spiego perche', senza l'ambizione di voler cambiare le vosre idee ma con il solo obiettivo di parlare in modo construttivo dei problemi dell'Italia ai quali tutti siamo chiamati a dare risposta nel segreto dell'urna.

Non voglio fare uno sproloquio ma solo indicare 5 punti che piu' di altri mi portano a sostenere e credere che il PD sia la speranza concreta per voltare pagina dopo 16 anni in cui tutti in Europa ci hanno superato mentre noi stavamo a dividerci tra quelli pro e quelli contro Berlusconi.

1 – Io non sono molto vecchio, ma nei miei 25 anni di vita non ho mai sentito nessun candidato alle Politiche dire che il suo obiettivo e' cancellare la mafia, la camorra per ripristinare legalita' e stato di diritto, Walter Veltroni e' stato il primo. Sono gia' pronti alcuni disegni di legge, preparati in collaborazione con Libera (www.libera.it), che consentiranno di usare con piu' facilita' i beni confiscati alla mafia e nel PD non c'e' nessuno che festeggia con cannoli dopo essere stato condannato per favoreggiamento... UDC? No grazie!

2 – Mai prima d'ora si era visto un cosi' alto numero di giovani e donne in lista con la certezza di essere eletti, mai prima d'ora si era visto un partito non ricandidare persone gia' elette per piu' di de volte (De Mita in testa che per quanto possa essere bravo e' giusto che lasci spazio ad altri e faccia politica fuori dalle istituzioni, come hanno deciso di fare in tanti nel PD tra cui Amato e Violante).

3 – Per la prima volta finalmente votero' qualcuno che ha alla base della propria intesa un programma di cambiamento per il paese, un unico leader ed un unico gruppo parlamentare, non un nemico comune da sconfiggere. Questo ha portato nelgi ultimi anni al bisogno di cercare il compromesso tra gli estremi opposti di uno schieramento che non facevano altro che tirare l'acqua al proprio mulino fino che l'acqua non finiva e noi si rimaneva a bocca asciutta come a solito. Correre liberi comporta rinunciare ad allenanze che portano voti, ma anche avere la forza di non dover rinunciare a cio' che si crede giusto.

4 – Il PD e' l'unica forza politica che dopo la crisi del governo Prodi avrebbe voluto rifare la legge elettorale e le riforme istituzionali che avrebbero potuto abbassare il numero di parlamentari e i costi della politica fin dalla prossima legislatura, tenendo fede alla volonta delgi Italiani che volevano il Referendum. Non si puo' diro lo stesso di altri che hanno preferito fare alleanze improvvisate e mosse da interesse personale tradendo la propria coerenza, l'onorevole Gianfranco Fini ha completamente perso la mia stima, peccato per lui. In piu' sono pronti disegni di legge per ridurre i privilegi della casta come per esempio passare per i parlmentari da una pensione di tipo contibutivo ad una di tipo retributivo, come gia' accade per tutti gli altri cittadini dopo il protocollo dello scorso luglio.

5 – Per la prima volta in Italia c'e' una forza che e' nata per unire, per mettere insieme persone che volgiano fare del nostro un paese moderno basato sulla meritocrazia. Per la prima volta correranno insieme sindacalisti e imprenditori, cattolici e laici perche' e' ora di finirla di scontrarsi su ideologie che appartengono al passato. Non nego che la presenza di alcuni radicali non mi fa del tutto piacere. Il nuovo e' anche questo: avere speranza e fidarsi... ci provo.

Sono stato un po' lungo, concludo. Rinunciare ad alcuni ideali di sinistra per me e' una sforzo ma lo faccio con la speranza che anche altri, magari tra voi (ne conosco alcuni), con lo stesso slancio riorientino il prorpio voto dal centro destra a questa forza che promette rinnovamento, speriamo che poi lo faccia davvero!

Credo al songo Spagnolo della sorpresa di Zapatero, e dico a gran voce:

Dear friends,

this time as you can guess my message is centered on the challenge of next week for my country, the political elections.

My support is for the Democratic Party, completely new party that we have been waiting for many years in Italy, composed by the previous social democrats and one of the catholic parties and many people that before where not in politics.

As you can imagine I am living with the nightmare to have again Berlusconi as prime minister, but the main feeling of these days is that now we can really build something new with this new party that is running for the first time alone and which has seen increasing its chances to win significantly for the last 2 months, the distance with Berlusconi was more than 15% and now is around 5%, still difficult but possible. That’s why the hope won’t abandon my until the 14^th of April, on Thursday I am fling back to Italy willing the best for my country… let’s see.

Anyway as for Obama in the US I just want to say:

Yes We Can!
